They would often pay for their stay by donating paintings, many of which are now held by the Glenbow museum in Calgary. Carl Rungius was one of the most notable of these artists. The owner in 2016, Tim Whyte, formerly from Winnipeg, had continued the tradition. I was fortunate to stay in Jimmy’s old cabin for the night, sharing the space with the friendly ghosts that reside there. It was named The Bermis Tree after a coal mining town which thrived here in the early 1900s. The tree had become a symbol of endurance for the people of the Pass. In 1998 the tree lost its battle with the wind and toppled to the ground. I was inspired to paint this winter scene of the lodge because it was bathed in such crisp afternoon sunshine. It looks so inviting at the end of a cold day skiing in the wilderness. A home smoked Goldeye or Mooneye takes on a golden colour. A red dye is often used with commercially smoked fish. Growing up near the park I would spend many leisure hours riding my bike in the area. The scene is painted from the cricket pitch facing north. The park is home to an abundance of old twisted oak trees which burst into colour in the fall. The Pavilion is home to one of Winnipeg’s best kept secrets as it contains a wonderful Walter Phillips art collection. Walter Phillips moved to Winnipeg from Britain in 1913 and resided there for several years before moving to Calgary then Banff to teach at the Banff School of Fine Arts. Although he is known most for his block prints, I admire him as one of Canada’s best watercolour artists. Several of his best works are displayed in the Pavilion. In 1898 he camped at Bow Lake and vowed to one day “build a shack here”. Twenty-five years later he did it! He built the first log cabin on the site, and he called his operation Num-Ti-Jah, which stands for the small animal pine marten. A few years later he opened the Num-Ti-Jah Lodge, back then with six guest rooms. Ten years later he expanded to 16 rooms – and that’s how it still is today. Some years the water levels are low and the portion of the falls on the left side of the protruding rock at the top of the falls is no more than a trickle. Other years both sides of the rock have an abundance of water creating a thunderous noise. I am always amazed at the vegetation which clings to the very edge of the canyon. The vegetation takes various forms as it enjoys the high humidity of the mist.
